Northumberland OPP have reopened the westbound 401, west of Trenton, about eight nine hours after it was closed by a multi-vehicle collision.

A report from the OPP said a tractor trailer jack knifed east of County Road 26 in Brighton at around 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, and four other vehicles were also involved in the collision, with one of the drivers being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan stated that stretch of highway was scattered  with separate collisions, where about  50 vehicles had spun  out or collided.

Northumberland OPP are still urging motorists to drive with caution and allow themselves extra time to reach their destination.

Highway 401 westbound was closed between Wooler Road in Quinte West and County Road 30 in Brighton until shortly after 6:00 p.m. while OPP members trained in collision reconstruction measured and documented the scene.

Weather and road conditions may have been a contributing factor, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

There was no updated information as of early Wednesday evening on the status of the injured driver.
