A tractor trailer caught fire on Highway 401 westbound, east of Belleville Tuesday afternoon.
Traffic came to standstill and Napanee OPP reported the highway was temporarily closed after a fire began near Deseronto Road shortly before 3:30 p.m.
Firefighters from Tyendinaga Township and Napanee fought the blaze off to the side of the highway.
Tyendinaga Fire Chief, James Oliver said the cab and about one-quarter of the trailer, which was carrying insulation, were destroyed.
He said the fire started in the engine of the vehicle. It was out by 4:30 p.m. although firefighters remained on scene dealing with hot spots traffic was diverted on Desertonto Road to Belleville Road to Highway 49 and back to 401.
While early reports stated only one lane was closed and the highway would be open by 4 p.m., reports later stated the highway was closed down with no definitive reopening time.
There is no information yet on the cause of the fire, or if the driver was injured.
